Japan is a fantastic destination to explore during the summer. From the resplendent weather to the cultural celebrations, summertime is when Japan feels at its most lively. June through to August marks several festivals that incorporate inspired fireworks displays and celebrations, bringing waterfronts and town centres to life after dark.

When travelling across Japan by motorhome, Tokyo is just the start of an incredible journey. June through August is also one of the easiest times of year to build a flexible route: you can follow the coast, link big cities with smaller festival towns, and choose between one-night fireworks stops or larger multi-day matsuri.

In this article, we’ll help you chase the summer fireworks across Japan in your RV. This 2026 version of the  guide includes a mix of familiar favourites and a few additions that were not front and centre in the earlier versions.

Hokkaido Jingu Festival & Toyako Fireworks, Hokkaido

June is the perfect time to head north. The Hokkaido Jingu Festival (Sapporo Matsuri), held from June 14 to 16, is a historic celebration featuring a massive parade in Heian-period costumes.

While in the region, the Toyako Long Run Fireworks are a must; they take place every single night from late April to October, making them an incredibly flexible addition to any Hokkaido campervan itinerary.

Atsuta Festival, Nagoya

A great place to start in central Japan is the Atsuta Festival in Nagoya, held each year on June 5 at Atsuta-jingu Shrine. It marks the coming of summer and blends traditional performances, shrine rituals and a lively evening mood with fireworks. Of the 50 or so festivals held here each year, the Atsuta Festival is the biggest and brightest.

Yokohama Night Flowers, Kanagawa

If you would like something more flexible for your RV itinerary, then Yokohama Night Flowers works well as a short stop on a wider Kanto route. Rather than being a single major matsuri, it runs as a series of summer waterfront fireworks events, with 2026 dates including June 13, July 4, July 18, and August 9.

Sumida River Fireworks Festival, Tokyo

With campervan rental, Tokyo is just one of many stops along the way. One of the season’s classic headline events is the Sumida River Fireworks Festival in Tokyo, held on the last Saturday in July, which falls on July 25 in 2026.

This is one of the city’s best-known summer traditions, drawing huge crowds to the riverbanks around Asakusa.

Atami Sea Fireworks Festival, Shizuoka

For a more relaxed coastal stop, Atami Sea Fireworks Festival is a smart addition. The official 2026 summer dates are July 20, 26, and several dates in August. The bay creates a natural amphitheatre, so the sound is especially dramatic, making it an easy fit for a route through Shizuoka or Izu.

Nagaoka Festival, Niigata

The Nagaoka Festival runs from August 1 to 3, while the famous fireworks displays take place on August 2 and 3. This event is rooted in remembrance and reconstruction, giving it a more reflective and powerful character than a typical summer fireworks night.

The Tohoku Big Three: Akita, Sendai and Aomori

Early August offers the ultimate festival “hop” in Northern Japan:

  • Akita Kanto Festival (Aug 3–6): Witness incredible skill as performers balance massive bamboo poles decorated with lanterns.
  • Sendai Tanabata Festival (Aug 6–8): The city is filled with thousands of intricate, handcrafted paper decorations. The festivities begin with the Sendai Tanabata Fireworks on August 5.
  • Aomori Nebuta Festival (Aug 2–7): Striking illuminated floats and energetic dancers fill the streets, culminating in a spectacular fireworks finale on August 7.

Lake Suwa Fireworks Festival, Nagano

The Lake Suwa Fireworks Festival on August 15 is another standout summer gathering. The setting is a major part of the appeal here, with fireworks reflecting across the water while the surrounding mountains amplify the sound, creating a dramatic natural backdrop.

Kaimon Summer Festival, Kagoshima

For a southern Japan option, the Kaimon Summer Festival in Kagoshima is scheduled for August 11, 2026. It includes taiko drumming and fireworks near the foot of Mt. Kaimon, offering a regional and local atmosphere that works perfectly for a southern road trip.

Plan Your RV Fireworks Festival Route the Right Way

A good campervan route is to treat the major festival dates as anchors, then fill in the drives between them with coastal towns, hot spring stops or quieter regional nights.

Hokkaido works well for mid-June, the Tohoku festivals create a perfect loop in early August, and the journey can be beautifully bookended by city celebrations in Tokyo or Nagoya.

Taken together, they create the kind of summer journey that feels full of local culture, not just isolated fireworks shows. That is what makes Japan’s summer festival season so special.
