Japan has Yummy & Interesting Souvenirs

Japan has not only beautiful sites and historical monuments but also yummy sweets and rice crackers suited for souvenirs.

Many people have already known that sweets made by companies in Japan like kit-kat (Nestle) or Hi-Chew (Morinaga) are insanely delicious.

(Nestle is not a Japanese company, but a Swiss Company, but many people think kit-kat is Japanese sweets. It is one of the Seven Wonders of Japan)

However, have you ever known there are a lot of local versions of kit-kat?

Do you know of any delicious regional Japanese sweets that have been handed down by word of mouth among the Japanese people?

In this article, I will show you what to buy for souvenirs in Tokyo to Tohoku area.

I recommend you to read our Campervan Road Trip Itineraries “Japan Tokyo to Tohoku area road trip”, which will make your understanding deeper.

Fukushima

Fly Me to The Moon Yokan Fantasia

I am sure you are wondering what he is talking about, but it is the name of a souvenir from Fukushima in Japan. It is the “Yokan” or sweet bean jelly

which is nominated for the Grand Prize of the “New Tohoku souvenir contest”.

Each time it is cut, the design on the cross-section changes, with the story of “the moon waxing and the bird flapping its wings”.

You can enjoy a variety of flavors: yokan made with champagne, lemon yokan, and azuki yokan with Aizu devil’s walnuts and other ingredients.

The price may be a little high at 3,500 yen/600g, but it will take you to the moon.

Imaginary, of course.

Miyagi

Kikuhuku

Is Green tea something to drink or to eat?

The impetus for the creation of “Kikufuku” came from tea Igeta’s focus on the fact that tea is not only something to drink but also something to eat.

The soft rice cake made from local glutinous rice is wrapped with a special “red bean paste” and “fresh cream” to create this exquisite cream Daifuku.

I know that some of you think beans is for dishes not for sweets. However, I just want to say it is different from other Japanese red beans sweets.

The point which makes it far from others is that point it tastes great when thawed and softened and also when half defrosted.

Those who do not like soft texture can enjoy the icy sweets texture if half defrosted.

You can enjoy half defrosted one or softened one, as your pleaseure.

It is so well known that it competes for first and second place in the Sendai souvenir ranking, and appears in the second episode of the Japanese popular

anime “Ju Ju Tsu Kaisen”.

Enjoy it!

Jagarico Beef tongue flavor

calbee product, Jagariko

Jagariko is known as a potato snack, and Beef tongue is a local special product in Miyagi Japan. Both are addictive and flavorful.

“OK! Then Mix them!” The food born out of this Japanese idea is “Jagarico Beef Tongue Flavor”.

You can buy “Jagarico” in only Japan, and you hardly eat beef tongue in other countries.

If you’re in Tohoku, try the Jagariko Beef Tongue Flavor, which you can try both at the same time!

Aomori

Hi-Chew Tohoku apple

To begin with, Hi-Chew is a popular Japanese soft candy known for its chewy texture and fruity flavors.

This Hi-Chew is made with the apple juice from the Tohoku region in Japan. You can enjoy the well-balanced taste of red apples with freshness and sweetness in this Hi-Chew.

Hi-Chew has 3 or 4 types of apple flavors, so it would be interesting to compare them.

Kininaru Ringo

Aomori produces about 60% of Japan’s apples and is known as a famous apple-growing region.

Hence, there are a lot of souvenirs made of apples in Aomori.

Kininaru Ringo is one of them. Whole apples are lavishly used in this apple pie!

Heavy! Yummy! Sweety!
