Japan is a very convenient country and you will be able to buy everything you need for your trip. Here are some items that are very useful to have especially for road trips. You will see what to bring for a road trip in Japan.

Layers and a waterproof jacket

Even in summer, mountain areas can be chilly at night. Be prepared for rain during your Japan roadtrip. Consider higher elevations. In Japan, summer nights are humid. Traveling by campervan in summer? Head to cooler spots like Oku-Nikko or Mount Mitake in Gifu Prefecture. At higher elevations, it can get cold when it rains. Don layers and a waterproof jacket. Remember, “There is so such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.”

Compact / folding umbrella

In Japan, where the weather can be wet, it’s crucial to have a compact umbrella on your road trip. This handy accessory will come in handy when you need to visit restrooms or explore sights during unexpected rain showers. Don’t forget to pack it before you hire a campervan and hit the road in Japan.

You can purchase this item on convenience store, the one from Familymart is the best in my opinion

Flip-flops / Slides / Clogs

Sandals are useful for quickly getting in and out of the vehicle, e.g., to and from restrooms and spa facilities / hot springs.

You can purchase this item on retail store everywhere, MUJI is one of the recommendation

Hat

When embarking on a road trip adventure in Japan with a campervan hire, having a hat is essential. It not only helps you hide those bedhead moments that can be challenging to fix in a compact space but also saves precious time in the morning rush. Japan’s sunny weather, even during the chilly winter months, means that the sun’s rays can be surprisingly strong. Thus, a hat becomes a versatile accessory, offering protection from the sun’s intensity throughout the year. So, whether you’re exploring picturesque landscapes or bustling cities, don’t forget to pack your trusty hat for a comfortable and stylish journey.

Waterproof bag / pouch / toiletry bag & towel

It is always useful to have a waterproof bag for visiting spa facilities / hot springs. Keep a towel, change of clothes, toothbrush, lotion and other items you will need after getting out of the bath in one bag! You can use the spa facilities / hot springs without anything as shampoo, conditioner and body soap are usually provided, but there is a charge for towels, so bring one with you.

Lightweight backpack

While embarking on a roadtrip through Japan in a hired campervan, it’s essential to consider that you’ll have convenient access to various destinations. However, don’t forget that Japan is a place where you’ll still do a fair amount of walking. Whether you’re sightseeing in bustling cities or exploring serene countryside, a lightweight backpack becomes your trusty companion. This versatile bag serves as a perfect vessel for extra clothing, a portable charger, refreshing beverages, and any delightful souvenirs you might collect on your journey. Plus, having both hands free is invaluable, especially when visiting shrines and temples, where numerous stairs await your ascent. In essence, a lightweight backpack is as indispensable as comfortable shoes and attire for your Japanese adventure.

Reusable shopping bag

When planning a roadtrip in Japan, consider the environmental impact. Avoid using plastic bags, which are not free, and instead, bring your reusable shopping bag to save money and reduce waste. Campervan hire in Japan can be an exciting adventure, and being eco-friendly by avoiding single-use items like plastic bags is a responsible choice for travelers.

Cash

Japan is still very cash dependent, so it is important to always have at least ¥10,000 in cash on hand. You will need coins (especially ¥100 coins) for laundromats and lockers at spa facilities / hot springs and other locations, and ¥1,000 notes for parking, so make sure you have them handy! When you need cash, convenience stores have ATMs.

Portable charger

You will be able to charge your phone / USB chargeable devices in the campervan, but there are times when you might be away from the campervan all day and need to charge a device. A portable charger is great to have, and many models often have a light. We recommend a charger that itself can be charged with a USB.

For a great road trip in Japan

These items are what we recommend you to bring with you, but if you forget something, you can always pick something up along the way. Japan is truly a convenient country, and that it is no exaggeration as pretty much everything you will need can be found at convenience stores, supermarkets and hundred-yen shops.
