Japan is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, but it really shines during the winter months. The land of the rising sun transforms into a luminescent wonderland during winter, with dazzling light displays that draw visitors from around the world. If you’re thinking of campervan rental, Tokyo is the perfect starting point for your journey as it allows you the freedom to explore some of the best winter illuminations at your own pace.

Tokyo – Sagamiko Illumillion

Kick off your tour in Tokyo, where you can enjoy the city’s festive atmosphere before heading to your first stop. Japan’s capital has plenty on offer during winter, including festivals and great food, so take a bit of time to explore this beautiful city at your own pace.

Once you’re ready, drive to the Sagamiko Resort Pleasure Forest, home to one of the largest illumination events in the Kanto region: Sagamiko Illumillion. This festival boasts over six million LED lights covering the hillsides and surrounding the lake, creating a mesmerising landscape. Attractions like the light-up Ferris wheel offer stunning views of the entire park. An overnight stay at the PICA Sagamiko campsite will let you explore the lights at your leisure, and it’s fully kitted out to cater to motorhomes for that added utility.

It has previously been awarded the Golden Award for being the best illumination display in Japan – and it’s no wonder why. There are thousands of intricate lights on display, as well as the iconic wisteria light tunnels.
