Kyushu is Japan’s southernmost main island, and it feels made for road trips. The distances are manageable, the scenery changes quickly, and each region has its own character. Travellers can move from steaming hot spring towns to volcanic highlands, coastal roads and historic cities in just a few days.If you’re picking up your campervan rental on the Tokyo-side of Japan, Kyushu works best as a longer campervan adventure. It takes a bit of planning, but the rewards are huge. With ferries, flexible driving days and well-chosen overnight stops, the journey becomes part of the experience. So, let’s go over the ultimate road trip guide to Kyushu by campervan!

Getting from Honshu to Kyushu by Ferry or Shikoku Drive

Driving from the Tokyo area to Kyushu is possible, but a ferry can make the journey easier and more enjoyable. Several long-distance ferries connect the Kansai region of Honshu with Kyushu, including routes from Osaka to Beppu, Kobe to Oita, Osaka to Shibushi in Kagoshima, and Kobe or Izumiotsu, near Osaka, to Shinmoji near Kitakyushu. Many of these are overnight services, with journey times often around 10 to 15 hours depending on the route. For this itinerary, a ferry to Beppu or Oita works especially well, as it places travellers close to hot springs, Yufuin and Mount Aso. Alternatively, if you have extra days to spare, taking a route that drives through Shikoku via shorter ferry connections is also highly recommended for an even richer road trip experience.

Best Time to Visit Kyushu by Campervan

Spring and autumn are especially good for a Kyushu road trip, with comfortable temperatures and pleasant sightseeing conditions. Kyushu is generally milder than northern Japan, but higher areas such as Aso can still be cold from October to March. This route avoids Hokkaido and northern Honshu in autumn and winter, as those areas can be affected by snow and icy roads. If travelling in cooler months, check the local weather before visiting mountain roads.

15-Day Kyushu Campervan Itinerary from Chiba

When you travel by motorhome, Tokyo is only the beginning. Starting in Chiba, this 15-day itinerary takes you south towards Kyushu for a journey filled with hot springs, volcanic landscapes, coastal roads and historic cities. While the direct ferry is a popular option, taking the time to travel through Shikoku is another fantastic alternative if your schedule allows.

DAY 1-2

Chiba to Osaka, Kobe, or via Shikoku to Kyushu

Collect your campervan in Chiba and begin driving west. Depending on your collection time, stop overnight around Shizuoka, Hamamatsu or Nagoya. This first stage is mainly about getting comfortable with the vehicle and covering distance at a sensible pace.

The next day, continue towards Osaka or Kobe, depending on your ferry route. Arrive at the port early, check in and board the overnight ferry to Kyushu. This is a useful chance to rest before the main road trip begins. Alternatively, taking a route that travels through Shikoku instead of taking the direct ferry to Kyushu is also highly recommended.

DAY 3

Arrive in Beppu

Arrive in Kyushu and start in Beppu, one of Japan’s most famous hot spring cities. Visit the colourful “hells” of Beppu, enjoy the steaming streets and relax in an onsen after the journey south. Beppu works well as the first Kyushu stop, as it provides a memorable introduction to the island without requiring a long drive immediately after the ferry crossing.

Day 4

Beppu to Yufuin

From Beppu, drive to Yufuin, a peaceful hot spring town surrounded by mountains. Walk around Lake Kinrin, browse small shops and cafés, and enjoy the slower pace before heading deeper into Kyushu. This is a short but scenic section of the route, making it a good contrast to the longer travel days at the start of the itinerary.

DAY 5-6

Yufuin to Mount Aso and Takachiho

From Yufuin, travel towards Mount Aso, one of Japan’s most impressive volcanic areas. The drive offers open grasslands, wide views and dramatic scenery. Access to the crater can change depending on volcanic activity, so check local guidance before visiting.

Continue to Takachiho, known for its gorge, waterfalls and interesting links to Japanese mythology. Walk the gorge paths, take a boat ride if available, and enjoy a quieter inland stop surrounded by nature.

DAY 7

Takachiho to the Miyazaki Coast

Leave the mountains and head towards the Miyazaki coast. Stop at Aoshima, known for its island shrine and unusual rock formations. This part of Kyushu feels warmer and more tropical, making it a pleasant change of pace after the volcanic highlands and inland scenery.

DAY 8-9

Miyazaki to Kagoshima and Sakurajima

rive south-west to Kagoshima, a lively city overlooking Sakurajima volcano. Spend the afternoon exploring the waterfront, trying local food and enjoying views across Kagoshima Bay.

The next day, take the short ferry from Kagoshima to Sakurajima and explore the volcanic island by road. Visit viewpoints, lava fields and coastal stops while following local safety advice around volcanic activity.

DAY 10

Kagoshima to Kumamoto

Begin travelling north to Kumamoto, a city closely linked with samurai history and one of Kyushu’s most important cultural centres. Its main landmark is Kumamoto Castle, an impressive fortress known for its bold black exterior, stone walls and long history.

Spend some time exploring the castle grounds, nearby gardens and surrounding streets before stopping overnight.

DAY 11-12

Kumamoto to Nagasaki and Fukuoka

Drive west to Nagasaki, one of Japan’s most distinctive harbour cities. Explore Dejima, Glover Garden, Oura Church and the Peace Park, allowing time to take in the city’s layered history.

From Nagasaki, head north-east to Fukuoka, Kyushu’s largest city. Try Hakata ramen, visit Ohori Park or enjoy the waterfront. For campervan travellers, it may be easier to stay outside the centre and use public transport.

DAY 13

Fukuoka to Kitakyushu, Oita or Beppu

Use this day to position yourself for the journey back to Honshu. Depending on your chosen route, drive towards Shinmoji, Oita or Beppu. This buffer day helps avoid rushing across Kyushu before departure and gives you more flexibility if traffic, weather or sightseeing plans change.

DAY 14-15

Return to Honshu (via Ferry or Shikoku) and Return to Chiba

Board the ferry back to Osaka or Kobe. The overnight crossing gives you time to rest, organise your belongings and break up the long return journey. Alternatively, returning via a short ferry ride and a drive through Shikoku is also highly recommended.
After arriving back in Honshu, drive to Chiba and return your motorhome. Allow plenty of time for breaks, traffic and vehicle return checks. If your journey arrives later in the morning, consider adding an extra overnight stop in central Honshu before returning the vehicle.

Why Kyushu is Worth the RV Journey

Kyushu offers a huge variety in a relatively compact area. In one trip, travellers can experience onsen towns, volcanic scenery, coastal roads, samurai history and relaxed southern city life.

For those searching for campervan rental Tokyo or motorhome Tokyo options, this route shows how far a Japan road trip can go with the right planning. Starting and ending in Chiba keeps the journey practical, while ferry travel makes Kyushu feel much more accessible.
