Chiba Coastal Escape: Take a Scenic Break Before Heading to Mt. Fuji!

70 minutes by car from the Toho Shrine, Kasamori-Kannon Temple is known as the “Temple of Prayer and Fragrance.” Its Main Hall, a National Important Cultural Property, stands on 61 stilts atop a rock, offering a mystical atmosphere. The temple is surrounded by lush nature, creating a serene environment perfect for contemplation and reflection. Visitors are also drawn to the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, making it a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

38km south from Kasamori-Kannon Temple to Katsuura Beach. Relax on the beach, stroll along the shore, and enjoy the vibrant blue waters and lush coastline—an ideal spot to unwind and take in the ocean’s tranquility. The beach is known for its peaceful atmosphere and clear waters, making it perfect for both relaxation and water activities. Whether you’re watching the sunset or enjoying the gentle waves, Katsuura Beach offers a serene escape from everyday life.

Head to South Chikura Swimming Beach with a 1-hour drive (45 km) from Katsuura Beach. This beach offers 400 meters of pristine white sand and vibrant tropical-blue waters, with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. It’s a popular spot for surfers, thanks to its consistent waves and open coastline. The smooth, expansive shoreline is perfect for a peaceful stroll, and at low tide, the wet sand reflects the sky beautifully—making it a favorite for photographers. Early risers are rewarded with breathtaking sunrises over the ocean, as the first light of day illuminates the water and sky in soft, glowing hues.

Drive 35 minutes (20 km) to Hasama Underwater Park for diving and other water activities, all set against stunning coastal views. This unique marine park offers a chance to explore the vibrant underwater world of Tokyo Bay, making it a favorite destination for divers of all levels. One of its most remarkable features is the underwater Shinto shrine, believed to be the only one of its kind in the world. Drive 45 minutes (36 km) north to Tōzen Temple – home to the enchanting Tōrōzaka Daishi Kiridoshi Tunnel. Wander through its captivating hand-carved stone passage, where natural rock walls are softened by the gentle glow of lanterns, creating a serene and almost mystical atmosphere. Originally carved through the hillside to ease access for pilgrims, this historical tunnel blends human craftsmanship with nature’s beauty. From Chiba, you can easily head towards the iconic Mount Fuji, making for a fantastic getaway.
Take the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line, a expressway that crosses the center of Tokyo Bay and connects Kisarazu to Kawasaki in just 15 minutes. Along the way, be sure to stop at Umihotaru, a unique rest area floating in the middle of the bay—it’s a must-see spot offering panoramic ocean views, local snacks, and a truly unforgettable experience.

Consider spending the night at one of the many charming roadside stations (Michi-no-Eki) along the coast. They’re perfect for relaxing, soaking in the local atmosphere, and enjoying regional specialties with a view of the sea.
